REFUGEE REALITY
Following up the great work of Swan Parish Youth in the previous post, SBS are running a stunning reality TV show called Go Back To Where You Came From. It runs for 3 consecutive nights starting Tuesday 21st June at 8:30 pm. The show follows six white Australians, some of whom are far from sympathetic to asylum seekers, as they retrace the journey of a typical refugee. This is essential viewing for all Australians, especially those of us who profess to follow the world's most famous refugee, Jesus of Nazareth. Many times we don't want to get involved in others suffering. However, the amazing thing is by sharing in someone elses suffering it touches our heart. As christians we must strive to reach out to our neighbours far and near.
ReplyDeleteI agree Steve. Often we don't want to get involved in other's suffering because it's just too inconvenient, or the 'it won't happen to me' attitude. In a moment, anything can change - it might sound cliched, but it's true. One can lose their house, money, car, possessions, friends, family and even their own life in a single moment. We're only one step away from suffering - we can only control so much of our lives.
ReplyDeleteIf we own a car and live in a house, we're in the richest part of the world (which makes up one third of it) - so why not share it with as many people as we can near and far?
I was born and raised in Australia and can't begin to imagine what it would be like to live in a nation where oppression/war reigns supreme and persecution is a normal part of life.
If people think we have an immigration problem, they just need to look at statistics for countries that aren't surrounded by sea.
Eventually Raquel got it right! What needs to be done is to fix the problem in their home country..... BUT until that is done we need to assist in as many and varied ways as possible, and we certainly dont need to label these PEOPLE as anything other than people.. and help. Sarah Simpson
